About My Teaching & Writing
Portugal
I received my B.A. in Library Science Education at the University of Maryland and embarked upon my career as a Library Media Specialist in a middle school in Maryland. A few years later, as Maureen Agar, I accepted a position to work in Lisbon, Portugal, at the United States Embassy. As Library Director, I coordinated programs with librarians serving children in their schools and public libraries.
Italy
My next position as Library Head, took me to The American School of Milan, Italy. During my seven-year-tenure, I received my MEd. in Curriculum and Instruction from Framingham State University’s study abroad program.
ECIS
I served as Chairperson of the (ECIS) European Council of International Schools Library/Media Committee, coordinating and presenting at the yearly conferences. I was the editor of THE LINK, the ECIS newsletter. Now ECIS is CIS, Council of International Schools, worldwide.
Germany
While in Milan, I met my husband, who is a teacher and administrator. Conferences and visits to nearby France, Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, and Great Britain were always a part of our life. Before returning to the States, we both taught for a year at The Frankfurt International School in Germany.
USA
I accepted a position as consultant for SIRS CD-ROM Resources, and my husband and I visited schools all over the U.S. in our recreational vehicle. Finally, it was time to settle down. We accepted positions in a private school in Fort Worth, Texas, bought our first home, and found our perfect dog, Petey.
India
After five years in Texas, we received an invitation to teach at The American School of Bombay, India. The travel bug popped up again, and we could not resist! As Library Head in Bombay, I worked with children from forty-eight different countries. Petey often visited me in the library, much to the children’s delight. One of my dearest treasures was discovering my frog puppet in India. He has accompanied me to all my schools, and children young and old love him. Living in India also gave us the opportunity to travel to Egypt, Thailand, Malaysia, Israel, Jordan and Morocco.
USA … Again
Five years later, we accepted positions in a charter school near Boston, Massachusetts. After a number of snowy and icy winters, we decided to move to Florida where we hope to stay. Unless…
Where to Next?
When I look back at all our travels and remember the children from so many countries and cultures, I am bursting with stories. It is time to share through picture books, chapter books, and novels. I might even write a memoir! Our son, who spent most of his school years abroad, pops his head up in my stories, and so does Petey!
